Violence in the Media What makes the Roadrunner and Coyote cartoons so funny and memorable? Of course, the explosions, hits and falls the Coyote takes while in pursuit of the Roadrunner. Pediatrics, a pediatrician read magazine, wrote an article on the influence violence, such as that in cartoons and other forms of media, has on children from ages 2-18 titled â€Å"Media Violence.† â€Å"Although recent school shootings have prompted politicians and the general public to focus their attention on the influence of media violence, the medical community has been concerned with this issue since the 1950s,† says American Academy of Pediatrics, the author of the article in November of 2001. The article calls for a need for all pediatricians to take†¦show more content†¦Despite these publications, the author has no proof of how these statistics are true and fails to go into any detail of why they may be true. Through the entire argument, the author puts out many statistics from random publications, but gives no reason as to why they may be true. Common math shows 6 hours and 32 minutes of exposure to media everyday, for example, would mean that if a child wakes up at 7 in the morning, goes to school at 8, and gets home at 3:30, the child must then consistently use those forms of media nonstop until he or she goes to bed at 10 which leaves no room for studying, playing with friends, or even eating dinner. The author, or authors are members of the American Academy of Pediatrics, who publish the magazine. No single name is associated with writing this article; rather, it states the names of everyone on the Committee on Public Education. Everyone on the committee is a certified Medical Doctor, and each is probably a pediatrician, but none of the statistics are backed with any sort of proof from them, only the publications to which they were taken out of. Some of the publications which the statistics are taken out of come from Universities though, which make them more believable than the ones with random authors. The authors seem to have carefully chosen their statistics and haven’t needed to say much to show what point they are trying to make. Any overseas employers or Australian employer can sponsor a worker under subclass 457 visa for four years[1]. If a person gets subclass 457 visa then the person can travel Australia for several times[2]. There are several English languages testing for subclass 457 visa which have to be qualified for getting visa are mentioned below: IELTS (International English Language Testing System): The overall score of this test is 5 and in each band its minimum score can be 4.5. OET (Occupational English Test): For allied medical health professionals, it is required that they should be A B pass and four components of OET should be present there[3]. TOEFL IBT: There should be score 12 in writing and speaking and 3 in reading and listening, total score should be 36. PTE (Person test of English (Academic): In each band there should be 30 and average score should be 36. CAE (Cambridge English: Advanced): In each band minimum score should be 147 and average score of the band should be 157. All these visa tests are valid up to 3 years and as per context Wang has to qualify these tests to get the visa for Australia. A table is mentioned below: There are some English language tests exemptions by which the applicants: If the passport of UK, USA, Ireland, Newzealand or Canada, is with the applicant, or 5 years of education of tertiary and secondary examination of the applicant should be from English medium. So he is eligible to sponsor David Wang but as he has charged $30,000 from Wang, so he has breached the rules Migration acts. If the sponsor (Tran) has breach the subsection 457 of Migration act, then he has to give civil penalties to the Australian court and obligations in his sponsorship will occur. As per Sponsor obligation, Jim Tran is not allowed to ask money from Wang As per subsection 457 for breaching Sponsorship obligations, the infringement notice of civil penalty that is, maximum $6,600 and $33000 will be asked from the sponsor (Tran) to the Australian court. According to Schedule 3 of subclass 457 if the employee (Wang) breaches the rules and try to take any illegal action then he will be penalized under Migration act of Australia. The most essential thing is fulfilment of rules of Subsection 457 of Migration act which Wang has to follow with some procedure to qualify the English Test Skills for getting the visa for Australia[4]. As the procedures suggested by Jim Tran is illegal, so by this procedure he will never get the visa for Australia. C. As David was not proficient for English, so with the help of sponsorship also, he was unable to get the visa. For that reason his wife, Ada took decision to apply for skilled visa for her husband. As she was a paediatric nurse, so her English skills may be more than David. For applying skilled visa there are some requirements which have to be fulfilled by her to get the visa. They are: The age of the applicant should be less than 50 and Ada was 33 years old. To work in Australia Ada should have sufficient knowledge of English and to qualify the English test. The qualification of Ada should fulfil the requirement of skilled occupation test. Ada has to get assessed by Australian Assessing Authority for nominated occupation which is a part of skill assessment. Sponsorship is also needed to be applied by Ada for getting the visa. As an applicant Ada has to be reasonable good health person because medical examination will occur before she migrate Australia. Even she has to be good character without any criminal record. As she is a medical health professional, so as per subsection 457, she has to qualify the English language test, especially OET (Occupational English Test) because she is a health professional (paediatric nurse). According to OET, the health professionals are A B pass and four components of OET. In the Point test of English Ada has to score 6.0 points. If the basic requirements and the point test are not qualified by Ada then she will not get the skilled migration application. D. Every occupation in Australia has a code, that is Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of occupations (ANZSCO) code. The ANZCO Code of a registered paediatric nurse is 2544-25 in Australia. If Ada is a registered nurse and her ANZCO code is 2544-25 then, she will get good opportunities for qualifying skilled visa from Visa Bureau migration[5]. For migration purpose, there are certain skill assessments which are responsible for assessing authorities for visa application. For specific occupation, skill assessment is needed to be obtained. Timeframe, assessment procedures and charges are needed to be accessed by that person who has got the authority[6]. Ada can apply for visa to Australian immigration Department and to show the assessing authority she has to be registered under Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The assessing authority of a Paediatric nurse is ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council). For training a nurse steps of ANMAC is essential. The Australian communitys health and safety is protected by ANMAC by giving proper assessment, training and education to the nurses, so that they can treat their patients properly[7]. Accreditation standards and study of the programs for nurses are provided by ANMAC who is their assessing authority[8]. For Skilled Migration Service, it is the responsibility of ANMAC to help nurses like Ada to migrate to Australia following the rules of General Migration Program. E. As per context, in all the 4 components Ada has obtained 6.0 which is the criteria of Competent English as per IELTS but she has to obtain score of 8 for Superior English Language Testing System in four test components whose point will be 20 and in Proficient English, the score which she has to obtain is 7 or more with 10 points. For more 3 years, she can seat for the English Language Testing System (IELTS) from which authority can be granted to her for getting visa under section 457 of migration law. As per context, Ada has to appear for the English Language Testing System (IELTS), in specific time and if she qualifies the proficiency test and her eligibility criteria is matched then she will get subsection 457 visa under migration act 2013[10]. F. In Migration act there are several rules and regulations under which the subclasses which are mentioned below through which Ada can apply for her visa for her family. Her husband wants to work in Australia and this are the subsections which are followed in visa act. If Ada gets the permanent residency then only she can get the citizenship and she can sponsor her husband and son for visa application in Australia under migration act of 2013. Several amendments and sections with subclasses are mentioned with various applications through which the progress and the application of visa can be followed under Migration Act. All rules and regulations of migration act are needed to be fulfilled for application of visa[11]. As per Migration act of Australia if Ada get the visa and citizenship of Australia, then after 2 years she can apply for Partner provisional visa for her husband and she can sponsor her husband David to migrate in Australia[12]. The charge which she requires to pay Australian government currently in 2015 for his offshore partner is $ 4,630 for getting visa for her husband David. Under subclass 100 of Partner visa for the first stage towards permanent residency, Ada can apply visa for her husband and for provisional visa, under subclass 309, she can apply provisional visa arrangement for her husband David. Adas son is 10 years old while his visa charge have to be applied while giving application for visa. As her child is dependant and she is the sponsor of the visa of her child then, as per sub class 445 of migration act, she has to pay $ 595 in AUD[13]. Had the three sisters not confronted Macbeth with the news of his possible future would he have thought of a deviant plan to murder King Duncan, and better yet, would he have had a future as a king at all? Another critic of Shakespearean Literature believes Their (the witches) two appearances divide the tragedy in two movements, the one of which unfolds the crime, and other as punishment. (Snider 289) If you refer back to the text you will find just as the witches appear before Macbeth the first time, the plot to murder King Duncan begins and immediately after the second visitation, the events leading to Macbeths death take place. Had the three witches not encountered Macbeth that day, would Duncan still be alive? The three sisters held the power of motivating Macbeth to kill Duncan by planting the idea in his head that he could be king. The ghostly dagger, which led Macbeth to Duncans chamber, also represents the supernatural forces that cause the fall of Macbeth. His benumbed isolation before, during and right after Duncans murder is one of the most vivid memories, and we can see him in the same abstraction again among the mourners after Duncan is found. (Manyard 62) Macbeths memories of the murder of King Duncan were too cloudy for him to remember because the disillusionment and distraction of the knife influenced him to go through with killing Duncan. Macbeth followed the bloody dagger to Duncans room and even thought twice about murdering the king. Manyard also states Shakespeare emphasizes the visibility of the dagger, partly, I suppose, because it is an instrument of powers that will repeatedly with blood, daggers, ghosts, and every insidious form of apparition- work on Macbeths sight and partly too because its appearance at this moment defines with characteristic ambiguity the complex kinds of sources of experience to which Macbeth as a tragic hero is sensitive. (3. 4.112-115) After all Macbeth has been through at this point, the witches and apparitions, he still cant grasp his connection to the supernatural. (Flathe 200) Any given persons human nature tempts them to take an easier path if shown the way. Some people exhibit more hardworking and honest traits than others. Macbeth was deceitful and dishonest, therefore following the path of the devil. Macbeth suffered the consequences of his actions by death. Though Banquo also suffered consequences of honesty, his heirs benefited in the long run by inheriting the crown. Macbeths decisions were influenced by supernatural encounters, causing him to tragically meet a doomed fate. These paranormal experiences and influences caused Macbeth to choose certain paths, only to lead him to self-destruction. Middle schools Essay There are some types of conditioning that are employed in middle schools and high school settings. Take for example when the teachers enter the classroom, students are â€Å"conditioned† to react in certain ways. Thus, this depends on what they are used to and how teachers will treat such type of behaviors. The initial reaction of the students is referred to as the ‘baseline behavior’ (Honolulu Zoo Organization, 2009). Before any type of conditioning is applied, this behavior should be observed and recorded. In a classical conditioning, there is a large dependence on the association of a stimulus to a response and has involuntary reactions (Comparison of Classical and Operant Conditioning, 2009). In a classroom setting, classical conditioning can also be applied. Say, students love their music class and that they love to sing. Thus, before each music class, the teacher would play a song. Thus, when the students hear the music, they may start to sing or hum to the tune of the music. This increases their awareness that music class will be next. Then, shaping is applied where a series of actions are equated to a series of reactions. This defines the difference between the baseline and terminal behavior. For an operant conditioning, the most notable feature is the ‘reinforcement’ and that the reactions are voluntary (Comparison of Classical and Operant Conditioning, 2009). Say when one teacher enters the classroom, the students to stand up and greet by applause. This may be construed by the teacher as the good behavior and, thus, the teacher may give a reward for each student when the students stand and applaud. Say, the reward is a candy bar, which now serves as the positive reinforcement. Consequently, without the â€Å"stand and applaud response,† the candy bar is withheld and students are forced to stand, thus a negative reinforcement. When this is done in an every â€Å"stand and applaud reaction† response basis, thus, continuous reinforcement is applied. Within the shaping, reinforcements may vary. The reinforcement may be done in random, meaning candy bar is not given every time the stand and applaud reaction is done by student, which is called variable reinforcement. If in case the teacher gives more candy bars for a louder applause, then this is now referred to as the selective reinforcement with the aim of increasing performance. Another schedule of reinforcement is the bonus wherein the students may receive more candy bars than the usual as a surprise. The terminal behavior is the behavior after the ‘shaping’ is applied. In this example, the students’ action of standing and applauding every time the same teacher enters the classroom is the terminal behavior after the shaping including the reinforcement. Negative reinforcement is if students fail to stand and applaud or if they just sit instead of stand, the candy bar is then withheld, thus, the students will go back to the stand and applaud response for the candy bar. Negative reinforcement then pushes that the students do something for their benefit. Punishment, on the other hand, is when the students stand and applaud and then they are all sent to the principal’s office, which weakens the ‘enthusiasm’ for stand and applause behavior. Then, if the candy bar is removed after the ‘stand and applaud reaction’, thus, the reaction is no longer encouraged and this is then called the extinction. Reward is a very powerful tool for students and the proper use of it should be understood before it is utilized by the members of the academe. In the same manner, rewards can make or break students’ habits and behavior. This could be dangerous since there is a tendency of students lacking the initiative to work without the reward. This may keep students from doing their best since there is no visible gain for better performance in school. On the other hand, this may also be very helpful in stirring movements for students towards positive actions and better performance. He was the second of nine children. Kennedy announced his candidacy early in 1960. By the time the Democratic National Convention opened in July, he had won seven primary victories. His most important had been in West Virginia, where he proved that a Roman Catholic could win in a predominantly Protestant state. When the convention opened, it appeared that Kennedy’s only serious challenge for the nomination would come from the Senate majority leader, Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. However, Johnson was strong only among Southern delegates. Kennedy won the nomination on the first ballot and then persuaded Johnson to become his running mate. Two weeks later the Republicans nominated Vice President Richard Nixon for president and Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., who was ambassador to the United Nations and whom Kennedy had defeated for the Senate in 1952, for vice president. Morris Lurie’s ‘Pride and Joy’ Essay

Write about how one character from Morris Lurie’s ‘Pride and Joy’ is presented and how this character develops key concerns in the story. Billy in Morris Lurie’s ‘Pride and Joy’ is initially presented as a 16 year old boy who literally lives his life in the footsteps of his abusive, irresponsible, bohemian father, Ned Mathews. By the end of the story Billy’s character has undergone a transformation to become his own person; he has broken away from his father. This short story is told in first person narrative by an anonymous narrator. This narrator is a tourist on an island in the â€Å"Great Barrier Reef† who tells his account of his encounter with millionaire Ned Mathews and his son, Billy. Through his characterization of Billy, Morris Lurie conveys themes of self realization, responsibility, judgment, and parenting. This essay will show how Billy’s characterization develops Morris Lurie’s themes. Wealth, ownership, control and his desire for his father’s approval shows how Lurie, through his characterization of Billy conveys his theme of lifestyle choices. Ever since Billy and his father come to the island they act like they own everything and everyone on it. When they go to eat breakfast in the morning, Billy deals with the â€Å"very pretty† waitress like she is a prostitute, â€Å"‘What’s ya name, honey? he said ‘Why?’ said the girl. ‘I always like to know the names of the girls I sleep with.† Lurie’s use of a colloquial language and inappropriate language such as ‘honey’ and ‘sleep with’ during Billy’s dialogue with a waitress show his desire to control a situation and to please his father; â€Å"‘Easy, son’ said Mathews, but his face was beaming with pride. Billy’s self-confident and commanding swagger, â€Å"He [Billy] walked with an exaggerated swagger† is an example of a movement which Lurie associates with Billy to show yet another aspect of his desire to dominate over everyone else in the restaurant. By exploring Billy’s inappropriate choice of lifestyle in great detail, Lurie expresses his theme, which is to take care when choosing your lifestyle. Billy’s desire to please his father and to control is reiterated by the motif of alcohol. Billy is too young to be drinking as much alcohol as he does, yet he does and he does it to please his father and to control by demonstrating that he is able to drink as much as his father. This is shown in the quotation, â€Å"His son [Billy] matched him drink for drink.† Lurie’s use of the narrator’s voice is very significant here because the narrator is presented to readers as very moral and sensible, so when the narrator talks about a boy drinking as much as a man we worry. This concern is further addressed by the narrative voice in the line, â€Å"I watched the boy. How long could he last? I thought. How long could he keep it up?† and also when he thinks, â€Å"Don’t tell me Billy is outdrinking him. I thought. His own son. His own pride and joy.† The pace is significantly sped up during these two quotations by the shorter more choppy sentenc es. This serves two purposes, first it makes the passage stand out from the rest of the paragraph and second it permits the narrator to clearly state his point. The repetition of â€Å"I though† in both quotations creates an effective link of the two quotations. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the meaning of the two quotes are linked and that the narrator is wondering if Ned Mathew’s own ‘ride and joy’, his son Billy is already better at living the life of a spoiled, rude man than Ned Mathews. This is ironic because Billy is just a boy, so of course the narrator wonders â€Å"How long can he keep it up?† Another example is, â€Å"‘When are we going to have some real drinking, Dad?’†¦ ‘I thought you told me we was gonna have some real fun.'† Billy’s arrogance and the awkwardness of having an adolescent talking about drinking with his father really shines through here. He is almost criticizing his father because he has not had any â€Å"real drinking†. Lurie employs dialogue and colloquial diction such as â€Å"we was† to make the conversation sound even more out of place. Lurie’s selection of alcohol as a motif in the story is important because alcohol has negative connotations and is illegal for adolescents to buy. By associating Billy with alcohol Lurie is implying that the life he is living where alcohol is a daily part of his routine is not suiting. Through Billy, Lurie evokes a theme of self realization which results in Billy’s character development. The first time there is evidence of this change in character is when Billy meets â€Å"the Princess† and eventually when he â€Å"started to cry† after him and his father got into a fight over his father’s abuse of â€Å"the Princess†. The most blatant example of this change however comes from Billy’s request for â€Å"tea† as opposed to the routine â€Å"coffee and beer†, â€Å"‘Not for me,’ said Billy, in a voice I had never heard him use before. A young boy’s voice. ‘Can I have’†¦. ‘a cup of tea?'† In this quotation Lurie utilizes related diction such as â€Å"Can† which has connotations of manners and kindness. Even the narrator recognizes Billy’s character development because he states that Billy spoke in a â€Å"young boy’s voice† which is a voice he had not spoken in before. The narrator is referring to Billy’s transgression from a boy who acts like an indecorous adult to a boy who acts like a â€Å"young boy†. There is also more subtle evidence of Billy’s character development in the text. The adjectives and adverbs change to correspond with the two different aspects of Billy’s character. In the first part of the text adjective and adverbs such as â€Å"bleary† and â€Å"cocky then in the second part of the short story Lurie uses a new selection of adjectives and adverbs such as, â€Å"neat†, â€Å"polite† and â€Å"young†. Lurie’s ability to reveal Billy through three different viewpoints: his father’s, the narrators and Billy’s own view of himself gives different perspectives to his character which helps position the readers to the themes of the short story. The overwhelming amount of dialogue in this text between Billy and his father Ned Mathews shows Billy and his father’s view that everything revolves around them. They are the only voice, which is heard in the story through dialogue despite the fact that there are roughly 80 other people on the island. The movements and actions of Billy convey part of his character. Billy’s actions are often direct or closely linked to the actions of his father. This shows the way that Billy looks up to the actions of his father, and how his father will abuse that respect throughout the story. Directly after his father tells the bartender to get â€Å"off his fat behind† and give a bit of service Billy says, â€Å"Yeah, shake it up there.† This quotation creates a nice image of the typical clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ where a father says something and then his son repeats it. Except Billy is mimicking a very offensive and inappropriate thing that his father just said. This shows the reader how Ned Mathews is a inconsiderate role model and a poor parent. Through Billy’s actions Lurie also shows that Billy is not prepared to live the lifestyle of his father. â€Å"The boy I noticed had to take a breath half way down.† This quotations refers to the fact that Billy cannot drink all of the beer in one â€Å"gulp† when his father can as proof that his father’s life is not necessarily appropriate for him. This concern of Billy not being suited for his father’s life is restated by the narrator when he wonders, â€Å"How long can he last?† Through Billy, Lurie is able to express his themes and concerns in an interesting and realistic manner. The themes and concerns developed in ‘Pride and Joy’ may appear to be very simple and obvious but that by no means makes them less important. Themes such as self realization, responsibility, judgment, and parenting are very significant in everyone’s lives.

Congressional Acts that Helps Uplift African Americans

The Search For Throughout history, there has been a struggle for equality and justice. The oppression that African Americans have received throughout the generational period in which they first arrived in America has continued to be a raging war. Article I, Section 8 of the American Constitution enabled Congress to have certain rights and authorities over the laws. In the evaluation of the 1700s, 1800s, 1950s, and 1990s, the prolific effects can be seen through specific Congressional Acts. Between 1775 and 1783, the American Revolutionary war was won and America was able to declare their freedom from the British rule. Although, freedom was given to whites, the same could not be said for black people within the society. A long awaited a historical NAACP court case was won in 1954 after the Supreme Court made a ground making decision in the Brown vs. Board of Education verdict. A lawsuit was brought against the Board of Education which denied back student the ability to attend schools with whites. This court case overturned the previous decision of Plessy v. Ferguerson of 1896, and helped to defeat the notion that America could be â€Å"separate but equal†. As a result segregation was banned and deemed as illegal, providing African Americans with the ability to be provided the same educational advantages as their white counter part. Yet the laws remained restricted pertaining to public entities such as restaurants. The Supreme Court ruled that segregation within the schools was illegal; the laws pertaining to Jim Crow remained in the 1960s. A Congressional Act passed in regards to the Voting Rights of 1965, which â€Å"encouraged African-American voter registration† (A. Leon Higginbotham).
